This historic club is a hidden gem whose presence is unknown even to many long-term residents of Bothwell. Located at the top end of Mill Road, it is completely surrounded by houses and accessible only by way of a gate and footpath from Mill Road.
It is believed that the original private club dates back to the 1800s. However, following a financial windfall in 2006 the membership seized the opportunity to completely redevelop the facilities and change status to a not-for-profit Community Amateur Sports Club. The old blaize court was dug up to make way for modern facilities including an all–weather floodlit tennis court, which makes for excellent all year round availability, and a compact brick clubhouse.
With only one court available the club is ineligible to participate in league tennis and the ethos is all-inclusive rather than competitive, more Rusty Racket than Andy Murray. Not that either wouldn't be welcome! Everyone, irrespective of age or ability, is welcome to come and play tennis just for fun, so there's no need for anyone to feel daunted if they're new to the game or haven't played for a while.
Membership has grown steadily. From a handful in 2006 we now have around a hundred, a high proportion of which are families. Prospective new members are welcome to apply at any time of the year, but may have to join a waiting list.
For more information on how to join please see the Membership Page.
Alternatively, email Club Secretary Alastair Wilson (see 'Contacts' page) or drop in to one of our open sessions. Social tennis is available on Thursday evenings from 7.00 - 9.30pm all year round; open coaching takes place on Monday evenings (juniors 7.15 - 8.15pm and adults 8.15 - 9.15pm) from May to October.
These open sessions provide an ideal opportunity to come along, meet some of the members and have a good look round. Bring training shoes and a racket and join in!
